SPRING INTO ACTION
Spring is a time to shed the old and welcome the new. But for those facing domestic violence, a clean slate often seems like an impossible dream. That's where WomenSafe steps in—providing a safe place, 365 days a year, for survivors in need.
By joining forces with community members who believe that we can make a real difference for those who need it most, and sometimes with a little “spring cleaning,” we can help survivors begin again. This was the case with *Sam and her son, who found a new life with the help of WomenSafe advocates.
After losing custody of her son due to the endless domestic violence disputes and misinformation fed to police by her abuser, Sam was ready to take any steps necessary to bring him home. She worked tirelessly towards her goals during her stay at WomenSafe and was connected with Job and Family Services to regain custody. She even found a place where she and her son could start their new life together and had just secured an exciting job opportunity, which paid well and made good use of her skills.
However, on the morning of her new employee orientation, she got a call that made her stomach sink. JFS was finally ready to review her case and they would be conducting an in-home visit the next day to discuss the possibility of the return of her son. She had just moved in a few days before, everything was still in boxes. When would she have time to get the house ready? In a panic, she called the one number she knew would be answered by someone willing to help—the COPELine.
While Sam went to her first day of work, WomenSafe advocates sprung into action and unpacked everything, from the kitchen to the bathroom to the bedrooms. When she got back that night, she stepped into what could only have previously been described as a dream. The space was transformed, her house was a home, and she would be ready for whatever the next day had in store for her.
The meeting went well and she regained custody of her child. They still live in the same home to this day.
