WHAT IS A CPO?

A Civil Protection Order (CPO) can grant a survivor of abuse (known as a PETITIONER) temporary relief from an abuser.

It can be filed by a survivor of abuse who fears for their ongoing safety when the abuser is a:

  • Family/household member.

  • Someone the petitioner currently or has lived with in the last five years

  • Someone the petitioner has a child with, regardless of where the abuser currently lives or if the petitioner was ever married to the abuser

Criminal charges do not have to be filed against the abuser to obtain a CPO and the petitioner can file with or without an attorney.

If the abuser does not fit the CPO requirements, there are other options available for support.
